MAPUTO, Mozambique- Media in Mozambique say about 2,000 people have fled into Malawi because of reports that gunmen from a former rebel movement were operating in the province where they live.Mozambique’s state news agency, AIM, reported Thursday that the gunmen had entered the northwestern province of Tete from Sofala, a province where fighters from the Renamo movement clashed with government troops last year. The civilians then fled from Tete across the border into Malawi.

Tete was severely affected by a civil war in Mozambique between Renamo and the Frelimo movement, which now governs the country. A peace deal was signed in 1992.

Tensions between the two sides have escalated ahead of general elections in October.-AP
