PJ MOOR has been given the responsibility to lead the Zimbabwe A side that will face West Indies in a three-day practice match starting tomorrow at Bulawayo Athletic Club. A statement from ZC yesterday said Moor will captain the local side, which includes experienced batsmen Chamunorwa Chibhabha and Brian Chari, as well as the seasoned bowlers Donald Tiripano and Michael Chinouya.

Despite the three-dayer being only a practice match, the duo of wicketkeeper-batsman Richmond Mutumbami and spinner Tendai Chisoro will be eager to impress as they work their way back into the national team set-up. The promising batsmen Tarisai Musakanda and Ryan Burl are also in the 14-man Zimbabwe A side that is expected to give West Indies a good run ahead of the two-match Test series in Bulawayo. The first Test is scheduled for 21-25 October, with the second one pencilled in for 29 October-2 November 2017. Both Tests will be played at Queens Sports Club.

Meanwhile, Prince Masvaure’s magnificent innings of 124 was not quite enough for David, played by a Midlands Rhinos team without nine players in the Zimbabwe Test training squad, to gain what would have been an amazing and totally unexpected victory over the Goliath of reigning Logan Cup champions Manicaland Mountaineers at Harare Sports Club yesterday.

The Mountaineers eventually won this thriller by two runs. Set the highest total of the match to win, Rhinos were led from the front by Masvaure, the acting captain, who had such a fine winter with the bat last year, earning him two Test caps, but lost form after that, until now, when it was needed the most. It was an afternoon when the balance of the match swung one way and then the other, and it ended in a thrilling climax.
