Beitbridge constituency Senator, Cde Tambudzani Mohadi, has donated food hampers to 30 elderly people in the district as part of her annual charity programme.

Cde Mohadi handed over the food items to senior citizens who are above 65 years at Old Government Complex.

The senator gave sugar, rice, tinned fish and soap to people from all the town’s six urban wards on Monday.

“The elderly are among the most vulnerable members of the community and hence the need to help them all the time,” she said.

“This is an annual programme where I remember the eldest members of our community and I am working on increasing the number of beneficiaries.”

Cde Mohadi challenged other people and development agencies to consider the plight of the vulnerable members of the community when rolling out their programmes.

The latest donation brings to 80 the total number of elderly people who have benefited from the programme this year.

In January, Cde Mohadi donated 5,5 tonnes of maize and 5,5 tonnes of rice to hundreds of villagers in Beitbridge East constituency.

The donation was complemented by the drought relief programme which saw 6 972 households from the district getting maize meal.

An average household in the district is estimated to have four people. “It is also important to note that besides this charity programme, Government will continue mobilising food aid for the needy citizens to ensure that no one dies of hunger,” Cde Mohadi said.
