ZANU-PF should step up mobilisation of its members to register as voters under the Biometric Voter Registration programme, whose mop-up registration programme is left with three weeks only, a senior party official has said. Investigations by Zanu-PF leaders have shown that party supporters mistakenly believed that issuance of electronic party cards meant BVR registration was complete.

Cde George Machacha, who is also the Chitepo Ideological College principal, said the anomaly was prevalent in Mashonaland West, East and Central. “Our priority as a party and its various structures is that in the remaining three weeks of the ZEC voter registration mop-up exercise, we mobilise resources to ensure our supporters are registered,” he said.

“Information we are getting is that in Mashonaland West, Central, East and Harare some of our people declined to register saying they had already been registered by ZEC. Upon probing they would produce a Zanu-PF electronic card.”

Cde Machacha said the party should move to ensure that all those who got party electronic cards are registered.

According to information released by the ZEC last Friday, Mashonaland West province had registered about 531 000 people while the mop-up exercise is ongoing.

Zanu-PF is targeting to register to vote at least five million of its members, which will guarantee the party a resounding victory in the harmonised elections later this year.
