Mighty Warriors ready for Egypt friendly

THE Mighty Warriors have intensified their preparations for two international friendly matches against Egypt scheduled for next week in Cairo. The senior national women’s football team, who took a short break late last year after their Unity Day Challenge Cup against Lesotho, resumed camp early this month to prepare for the matches in Egypt.

They are using them as part of their preparations for the African Women Championships qualifiers starting next month. The championships will be held in October in Namibia, and Zimbabwe will be hoping to qualify for the continental showpiece.

The Mighty Warriors will begin their campaign for qualification against Botswana on the weekend of February 13 to 15 in Gaborone and the return leg will be played two weeks later.

If they beat Botswana, they then meet the winner between Zambia and Tanzania in the last qualifying round.
And the women’s senior team is leaving no stone unturned and they have been involved in a number of friendly matches to prepare for the task ahead since last year.

Team manager Charity Munemo said preparations were going on well and the team will leave on Sunday ahead of their matches pencilled in for January 22 and 25.

“The preparations are going on very well and the players are eager to participate in that tournament. It’s Zimbabwe and Egypt. There are two games on January 22 and 25,” said Munemo.

Zimbabwe failed to qualify for the last edition of the African Championships after they lost to Nigeria during the last qualifying rounds in 2012.

They had played Botswana in the preliminary round. However, last year they got a fair draw meeting Botswana again in their opening match and they will be hoping to make it to the main event in October.
