Mighty Warriors hopeful ahead of AWCON

MIGHTY Warriors players, Felistas Muzongondi and Emmaculate Msipa, have acknowledged they will have to up their game if they are to make it into the final team that will take on Namibia in the Africa Women Cup of Nations qualifiers first round on April 5.

The Mighty Warriors, who were last active in September last year, regrouped at ZIFA Village last week for the upcoming tie.

They begin their campaign away in Windhoek on April 5.

The return leg is on April 8 at Rufaro.

The trio of Muzongondi, Msipa and Mavis Chirandu, who are regular faces in the senior women’s side, missed the COSAFA Women’s Championships last September as they were undergoing military training.

They bounced back into the fold after they were called into camp for the Namibia match.

Muzongondi said the call-up shows the faith the technical team led by coach Sithethelelwe “Kwinji 15” Sibanda has in them.

But she noted that there is quite some competition as everyone was fighting to make it into the final team and they have to work extra hard to earn their places after the break.

“There is a lot of competition in the squad, there are some young players who have joined the team and they are bringing in good competition.

“No player is guaranteed of a place in the national team, so we are all fighting hard to be in the first team.

“After a break for a year or so we were called back into the squad. I think the coaches still have faith in us and for the meantime we are still trying to cope up with others.

“The training we went through it is tough. So we are trying to catch up with others.

“We have played some of the big games before and I think we have the experience, so I think it will come in handy,” said Muzongondi.

Msipa said she is hoping for the best.

“I didn’t expect it, that after eight months without playing soccer, going through military training I would be called for national duty. So I am really happy.

“We are hoping to bring good results to the nation and our supporters. We will do our best,” said Msipa.

The team is scheduled to fly out on Tuesday.
