round of the qualifiers next month.
And the team was scheduled to play Senegal this weekend at the Colliery but the visitors informed them they could not make it and have been replaced by Zambia.
The Mighty Warriors last played competitive football early in February when they beat Botswana over two legs.
They regrouped two weeks ago as the preparations for their date against the West Africans got underway.
And coach, Rosemary Mugadza, said her team had not changed much.
“Our training programme went on well and the girls haven’t lost much shape although we need to work extra hard. We would have loved to play a team from West Africa as we prepare for the crucial tie against Nigeria.
“We sought a friendly with countries such as Ghana, Cameroon and Cote d’Ivoire but they didn’t respond positively.
“But I am confident that Zambia, who are preparing for the qualifiers and will be meeting South Africa when we play Nigeria, will give us good competition.
“They know we have beaten Banyana Banyana twice and were so eager to have a friendly match against us,” said Mugadza.
The coach added that it made sense to play the match in Hwange as the conditions will resemble those of the West African nation.
“It also good to play women’s football matches outside Harare as the sport continues to develop to all areas and we hope we will have an exciting game,” said Mugadza.
The Mighty Warriors are hoping to turn the tables on the African powerhouse after their junior side, the Under-20 team, lost 6-0 on aggregate in the World Cup qualifiers early this month. However, the senior team, which is yet to win against Nigeria, are unfazed by the prospects of meeting the World Cup finalists.
The Mighty Warriors met She-Polopolo in last year’s All-Africa Games qualifiers and Zimbabwe beat them 4-1 on aggregate.
Mugadza has drafted in two new faces — Black Rhinos’ Viola Ndlovu and Inline Academy’s Tallep Mazesese – into the final squad of 20 players who were scheduled to leave this morning for Hwange. Zambia are expected to arrive tomorrow via Livingstone.
The team has also been boosted by the return of defender Lilian Masase who was in Norway.
But they will miss another defender Ruvimbo Mutyavaviri, who is on three-month attachment in Sweden.
