He refuted media reports which allege the late Cde Matau was not a party supporter, but died for party regalia. She served as a war collaborator during the liberation struggle and was within the party’s Chitungwiza district structures, he said.

Cde Matau died while a number sustained injuries at Chibuku Stadium.

The rally, which was attended by thousands of people, was addressed by President Mugabe.  Cde Matau was injured in a stampede that occurred when people were barred from entering Chibuku Stadium, which had exceeded its capacity. She was rushed to Chitungwiza Central hospital where she died. Burial arrangements will be announced in due course.
