A Harare man was crushed to death after his colleague accidentally switched on a machine that was under repair at a brick moulding company last Sunday afternoon.

So gory was the incident only the man’s head and an arm were the only body parts that were left intact.

The man was identified as Greystone Damazio (37).

The incident occurred in Marlborough at around 2.45pm.

Chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba, confirmed the incident.

“Damazio who was employed at a brick moulding company as a supervisor, was carrying out maintenance work on the brick moulding machinery together with his colleagues.

“One of his colleagues mistakenly switched on the machinery that was still being worked upon by Damazio. Damazio was then struck by the rotating blades, which sliced his body into pieces, leaving only the head and the left hand intact,” she said.

She appealed to members of the public to be cautious when dealing with machinery.

Seventy one people died from work related accidents in the first eight months of last year, while 3 598 were injured, signalling the need to do more to reduce the accidents.

In 2011, at least 75 were killed, while 4 158 workers were seriously injured at the workplace.

In 2012, 5 141 were injured, while 107 were killed.

In 2013 there were 5 666 injuries recorded and 76 deaths.
