THE Government has refused to renew the work permit of an Englishman who has been carrying out research into African education and community development in Rhodesia.
Maurice Glickman (31), who came to Rhodesia a year ago on contract to the University of Rhodesia has to leave the country by July 2.
Glickman was told on May 2 his work permit would not be renewed. On June 5, he was advised the matter was being “reconsidered”, but on June 11, he was told the decision was final.
He said yesterday, he had no idea why he was not being allowed to remain,
“I have not been involved in politics in any way, nor have I had anything to do with security matters,” he said.
During the past year, he has been living and researching in the Seki rural area. As part of his research programme, he helped set up the area’s first kindergarten.
He also helped the community set up a youth club and had started to advise Grade Seven teachers on how they and their pupils can prepare a supplementary textbook in English for publication.
He said the children of the area will, in fact, be the authors of their own textbook.
LESSONS FOR TODAY
- It is a well-known historical fact that during the UDI era, the Smith regime expelled Westerners deemed to be sympathetic to the black people’s cause.
- Apart from teachers, many missionaries were classified persona non grata, and kicked out of the country.
- In 1975, Clive Kileff acknowledged the Research Fellow Glickman in a refereed journal article: “The Rebirth of a Grandfather’s Spirit: Shumba’s Two Worlds”.
- For the avoidance of diplomatic tiffs, researchers, journalists and other professionals must tell the truth about their work, when visiting foreign countries.
- Some professionals have applied to enter foreign countries as tourists, when in actual fact they would be spying on them.
