Lessons learnt from a day with an artiste

As a creative with big dreams, I have always treasured meeting individuals who are doing the most with their talent.  I’m speaking of seemingly ordinary people who are doing extra ordinary things with their gifts and talents, including those I consider celebrities.

In our country I have noticed some people do not really seem to care one way or another, whether someone is famous or not.

Rarely would one come across much of groupies and fans falling over themselves, clamouring to greet a famous person, but it doesn’t mean we don’t have them, depending on one’s definition.

It can be hard to know how to act when you meet someone whom you have only admired through the media.

You might even miss the opportunity to tap into what they know, or even not know what to ask them, or how to learn from them.

Whether you are a number one fan of a celebrity or just happen to run into someone successful or famous, it is important to be polite, appropriate, and respectful and know how to interact with them in order to have a rewarding encounter.

I had the opportunity to meet Bryan K, also known as Bibo Worldwide, an artiste I admired in music and whose guitar skills I find captivating and a joy to listen to.

I happened to be in an environment where he was being interviewed and had a chance to have a chat with him on wide ranging topics.

So I will share some things I learnt which I believe my fellow youths could benefit from:

Humility when doing well

When doing well in a career, some people become prideful in a way that makes them unpleasant to be around.

When I went to the gate to show Bryan K  the way into the premises where the interview was going to be, I was truly nervous. However, he was very pleasant which made it easy to talk to him.

He showed interest in my work as well  with a willingness to share some advice with me as an upcoming musician. Through out his interview I watched and learned a lot on humility,.Pursuing your goals

He gave advice to me and the team I sing with regarding music, reminding us that music is a lot of work. I wont do justice here, in sharing it all, but will surely put it into practice.

It may seem easy or simple to some, but to those who perform their music with excellence, it takes hard work, sometimes sleepless nights working on one’s craft .

You don’t wake up an amazing singer but you have to work at it.

Practice makes perfect.

Choosing a partner

I learnt that there is no need to rush without prayer, and caution in one’s choice of a partner.  For young people, sometimes it is okay to take time off dating, to focus on yourself, or your studies, or on becoming a better person, in preparation for the time when you will indeed meet that person.

It’s not a rushed decision.  One of the he mentioned was the beauty of the all natural’ woman that he sings of  in his song Heavy Machine.

I have observed that bleaching, fake hair and such cosmetic tastes, are not that popular with some guys  whether young or much older, who want to settle down, I may be wrong on this one- its open for debate, but its what I have observed.

Giving back

Bryan K, gave of his time and seemed passionate to help young upcoming artistes. Again I learnt through observing how he gave his time to us, without directly teaching about giving. We had a bit of a music session,  got a chance to play his guitar and he played mine and even signed it, which was so cool. He helped out with our music.

He shared with us that music is part of telling a story, its not only in the singing, its about the instrument as well as creativity.

He patiently  gave tips on expressing one’s creativity, and slight changes  in some chords which made a big difference in a song  our group wasworking on.

To top it all up, he offered his time and expertise in guiding us on steps we had missed as we prepare to record our EP and to do the actual recording. What a gesture from someone who doesn’t have to do it, but is believing in and investing in the dreams of others. Sometimes that is all we need as youths- that support and guidance in pursuing our dreams be it pursuing a given career or in starting a business.

It goes back to my point on humility, Bryan K is humble -I’m used to meeting some artists that think they are God’s gift to humanity- which they are but he’s so chilled. What I expected and what I saw were two different things. He brought his own equipment from his place, to my little room used his own fuel and all-and helped us see areas we needed to work on and we are working on out music with great pointers.

What an inspiring encounter.

I will savour this experience and hope to one day be an inspiration to others.
