Home Affairs Minister Kembo Mohadi has officially opened the 23rd East and Southern Africa Regional Branch of the International Council in Archives (ESARBICA) general conference in Victoria Falls.

It is the second time that Zimbabwe is hosting the conference after hosting it in 2001 since its establishment in 1969. About 450 archivists and record managers from 13 countries are attending the five-day conference that ends on Friday.

In his remarks, Minister Mohadi implored the ESARBICA leadership to utilise regional bodies such as the Sadc and the East African Community as well as the African Union to lobby for greater recognition of records, archives and information management issues.

“Your chosen theme, “Archives, Uses and Underutilisation” should provide a platform to reignite interest and appreciation of the role that you play in the promotion of national pride and identity,” said Minister Mohadi.

ESARBICA president and Kenya director of Archives Mr Francis Mwangi said the board’s main objective was to foster archival development.
“I hope what you have learnt here you will implement at the workplace,” he said

ESARBICA vice president and director of the National Archives of Zimbabwe, Mr Ivan Murambiwa said NAZ was in the process of digitising its record-keeping in line with international standards.

Zambia’s ambassador to Zimbabwe, Ndiyoi Mutiti and South African History Archive director, Ms Catherine Kennedy also gave their remarks.
