Kwekwe worried over road rehab pace Mayor Madzoke

Kwekwe City Council has raised a red flag over the snail pace that the road rehabilitation programme that was officially launched at a colourful ceremony last month, was going.

The local authority last month launched the programme, which was supposed to see the resealing of more than 63 kilometres of road network in Kwekwe after ZINARA availed $2,5 million for the exercise.

Kwekwe quickly engaged N-Frays Company for the repairs of more than 32 roads in the city.

But speaking during a full council meeting recently, Kwekwe Mayor Matenda Madzoke said council was worried over the slow pace at which the contractor was working to repair the roads.

“The pace at which they are going is worrying, we were expecting that they should be somewhere now had they been doing at a faster rate,” fumed Cllr Madzoke.

He tasked the city’s director of Works, Engineer John Mhike to engage the contractors to find out if there were sticking points that needed ironing out.

“I think Eng Mhike should find out from the contractors if all is well because surely I am not happy at the pace that they are going,” he said.

Contacted for comment, N-Frays projects coordinator Mr Innocent Kwari said everything was above board although the company was facing some small challenges. “Everything is under control. The only problem is that the roads we are repairing are used by public transport and they are the main roads obviously we are bound to face challenges here and there,” said Mr Kwari.

He also pointed out that they were facing cash shortages, but these had been rectified. “We are facing hiccups here and there, remember we are using our own funds for the project,” he said.
