NAIROBI. — Kenya’s leading mobile network operator, Safaricom Limited, is among the leading contenders for awards at the upcoming AfricaCom Awards. The company has been nominated in several key awards, among them the Industry Personality of the Year, which sees its general manager of financial services, Betty Mwangi-Thuo, nominated alongside industry heavyweights Chris Wood, WIOCC chief executive officer; and Nick Rudnick, Liquid Telecom chief executive officer Nic Rudnick.

Mwangi-Thuo is hailed as has previously been named one of Africa’s most influential women in technology this year. The executive has largely been credited with spearheading Safaricom’s globally recognised mobile money transfer service, M-Pesa. Safaricom is nominated in three other awards, namely the Rural Telecoms Award for its Vuma online offering, Best Mobile Money Service for M-Shwari and the Most Innovative Service for its Cashless Payment Solution.

The awards ceremony will take place at the Waterfront in Cape Town, South Africa, on November 13 at the AfricaCom Awards ceremony and gala dinner.

AfricaCom, scheduled for the coastal city’s International Conference Centre, is the continent’s premier annual technology event. Now in their sixth year, the AfricaCom Awards are recognised as the premier accolade for firms and executives operating in Africa’s digital market. — CAJ News.
