THE 2014 Zimbabwe national karting season launched with a great day’s racing last Sunday.
Twenty-seven drivers took part in 16 races held between 11am and 4pm at the karting track at Donnybrook in Harare.
The cadet class had the most entries, with 10 youngsters between the ages of seven and 10 racing round the track at speeds of up to 65km per hour.
For Seth Machiwenyika, Johnathon Ruwisi, Ryan Mukandiona and Bradley Hockey, it was their first race meeting, but they drove well and it was exciting to see so many karts on the track at once.

The Minirok class, for 10 to 13-year-olds only had four entrants, but there was very close rivalry between Cameron Revolta and Zac Dufty.
In fact, their qualifying times were only 0.01 second apart! Young Calvin Mukandiona drove his very first race and certainly did not disgrace himself, although Danika Hockey beat him when she took third place.

The junior class saw six drivers on the track. Keegan Davie, who was driving his first race in this class in a brand new kart, having moved up from the Minirok class last year, drove brilliantly into first place ahead of Rogan Hoffman.

The final class also had six drivers in and featured two dads, Maurizio Savo and Brendan McConnell, racing head to head with their sons, Ale Savo and Michael McConnell.

At the end of four heats in each class, a podium ceremony was held to announce the winners.
In the cadet class, Luke Rousseau came first, with Samuel Mliswa coming second and his brother David third.

All entrants received a medal for competing.
In the Minirok class, Cameron Revolta won, with Zac Dufty coming second and Danika Hockey third.

Both Luke and Cameron also received Lego sets from Enchanted Zone as part of their prizes.
The junior podium saw Keegan Davie on top, with Rogan Hoffman second, followed by Isabella Savo.

On the max class, Brendan McConnell beat Ale Savo and his son Michael came third.
The next race meeting will be on June 1 at Donnybrook. Entrance is US$5 per car and there is a full bar and catering.
