Kariba Municipality has embarked on massive road rehabilitation programme after Government allocated it $550 000 through the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Fund being administered by Zimbabwe National Road Administration.

Kariba Municipality director of housing and community services Mr Godfrey Tichaona Magijani told The Herald last Friday that road works have already begun. Mr Magijani applauded Government’s intervention, saying the resealing and gravelling of roads in the town was going to change the face of one of Zimbabwe’s prime tourism centres.

He said the municipality received $550 000 from Government this year, but the amount was lower than the $649 793 it got last year.

“We have started our road works with six kilometres being resealed and 25 kilometres of gravel roads being fixed,” said Mr Magijani.

“Roads which are being worked on include Cut Sark, Breezes, Mica, Mahombekombe and Heights.”

Kariba legislator Cde Isaac Mackenzie welcomed the development, saying it will contribute positively to the turnaround of the town’s tourism strategy.

“An effective road network system is one of the components which need to be maintained here in Kariba as tourists have to move swiftly from different points,” he said.

Government is set to construct a tarred road that will link Kariba and Victoria Falls, a move that will boost tourism in the envisaged Victoria Falls Special Economic Zone.
