ZIMBABWEAN coach Kaitano Tembo fulfilled his mission to save SuperSport United from relegation on the final day of the South African Premiership season on Saturday.

Tembo was handed the challenge to try and save the club from the axe after the Pretoria side parted ways with coach Eric Tinkler.

The former Dynamos centreback negotiated the tricky assignment when his men beat Baroka 1-0 on the final day on Saturday afternoon.

The hosts were awarded a spot-kick after 25 minutes, with Aubrey Modiba stepping up and converting the penalty to put the home side in the lead.

In the end, Tembo’s men held on for three points, although Ajax Cape Town’s loss to Kaizer Chiefs meant both SuperSport and Baroka were safe.

SuperSport bosses have already told Tembo he can apply for the big job if he is interested in securing it on a substantive basis.

The club are also home to a number of Zimbabwean players — Kingston Nkhatha, Prince Dube and Evans Rusike.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwean winger Talent Chawapihwa of Baroka has been named one of the top 10 signings of the season by Kick-Off.

Chawapihwa was named the seventh best signing.

“Signed after his impressive performances during the 2017 COSAFA Cup in the North West, Chawapihwa hit the ground running with Bakgaga,” Kick-Off said.

“He caught the eye with his trickery down the left flank and Baroka always looked threatening whenever he was in possession of the ball. He finished the campaign with one goal and five assists.” — Sports Reporter/Kick-Off.
