Blessings Chidakwa in Kadoma
The Kadoma City Council is set to connect its recently acquired 30 megalitre water pump, to double its pumping capacity to at least 60 megalitres per day.

Increased water demand in the city was weighing down its capacity to provide water to residents and other ratepayers.

Kadoma had two by 30 megalitre capacity pumps at Claw Dam and only one was functional before council acquired a third one, which only needs a switchgear to start operating.

Council has since committed itself to securing the switchgear.

Kadoma Town Clerk Mr Malvern Dondo last week issued a notice inviting tenders for the supply of the switchgear, raising hopes among residents that water challenges will soon be a thing of the past.

“Supply and installation of a switchgear set for Claw Dam Tower Pump No. 3. Specifications including income voltage of 3,3kVand motor rating 3.3kV, 400hp,” reads part of the tender.

Doubling of the water pumping capacity will be a welcome development in the city, which is growing rapidly with new suburbs mushrooming around the city. Private land developers have also sought to be connected to the existing water system, which is not even sufficient for existing households.

In a recent interview, Kadoma Mayor Councillor Action Nyamukondiwa said 60 megalitres would be enough to cater for the whole city. He said part of the $2,1 million they are going to get under the Public Sector Investment Programme next year will be used to erect a new line dedicated for the new suburbs including Victory Park.

“We are proposing to use part of our $2,1 million from PSIP to erect a dedicated line from Blue Ranges to water reservoir tanks to assist pressure in the newly-built suburbs. The existing line has too many take-offs so it will be congested when we also connect the new suburbs,” he said.

The recommendation for council to acquire the required switchgear was made soon after the July 30 harmonised elections by commissioners who ran the city affairs.
