NAIROBI. – President Uhuru Kenyatta has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to use information and communication technologies to transform the lives of Kenyans.
The head of state made the pledge during the just-ended three-day Transform Africa summit.
“ICT is no longer a luxury but a powerful tool to transform and improve the lives of Kenyans at large,” said Kenyatta at a session titled “The Coalition of the Willing”.

He added that his government was fully determined to ensure that Kenyans benefited from the advantages of ICT and related technology. He indicated that Kenya had prioritised use of ICT in its development agenda due to its potential to trigger and industrial revolution that the county desperately needs for transformation.

Kibaki said ICT was vital in reducing the cost of conducting business, which was key to spurring economic growth. The president pointed out that job creation for thousands of unemployed youths in the country was among the issues embracing ICT would help address.

He mentioned the laptop project for primary school going children that featured prominently in his election manifesto as a sign of his government’s commitment to promoting ICT in the county. He added that his government introduced the scheme to ensure ICT education stems right from the basic education level.

Kenyatta added that allowing children access to ICT at a tender age would enable them to interact with the rest of the continent and thus foster faster integration of the continent.

A series of failed procurement tenders, which government has blamed on high rates by bidders, has, however, derailed the exercise. – CAJ News.
