A disabled and homeless 17-year-old boy from Gokwe, Brian Sandi, has been living in the open behind Carter House in Mbare but Zanu PF shadow Member of Parliament for the area, Cde Andrew Makahamadze, heard him and has found him decent accommodation and money for food but the boy still needs specialised medical surgery.

Cde Makahamadze sourced funds for both rent and food through the Southerton Constituency Development Trust (SCDT) after Brian made an appeal on the public broadcaster, ZBC recently.

Cde Makahamadze said it was the duty of the trust and his own duty as the shadow MP of the area to ensure that the needs of all people who come into his constituency are met.

“I was touched by the situation after it was published by the ZBC which compelled us to pay the boy a visit and we discovered that he was living under squalid conditions. This prompted us as a trust to sit down and source funds for rent for him to find shelter during this rain season. He cannot continue in such dire situation” said Cde Makahamadze.

He also promised to liaise with Harare Central Hospital so that Brian could have corrective surgery done. “We are going to liaise with Harare Hospital so that Brian can be assisted on the corrective surgery as prescribed by doctors,” he added.

Brian, who became paralysed from the waist down after a mine accident, arrived in Harare 6 months ago, and has been staying in a plastic shack. But rain seeped through and was soaking all the blankets.

He can only make small movements. Brian, who thanked Cde Makahamadze, said he was still in need of more support.

“I am appealing for assistance, especially a wheelchair. I have to wear pampers but I cannot afford tehse as they are expensive,” said Sandi.  His mother, Mrs Efineri Moses said her son needs corrective surgery to his backbone, and appealed to well-wishers to help with the money needed for the process.

“We have been here since the end of May 2019. I have received promises from well-wishers but until now there is no hope,” narrated Mrs Moses. Zone 6 District Coordinating Committee (DCC) Secretary for Youth Affairs Cde Emmanuel Mahachi pledged to assist.

“This is just a tip of an iceberg, we are appealing to the corporate world to assist Brian to meet his needs especially on the corrective surgery,” said Cde Mahachi.
