Heroes holiday accidents up 5pc

MANICALAND recorded a five percent increase in traffic accidents during the Heroes and Defence Forces’ Day holidays, the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe has said.

Speaking at a Health and Safety Expo organised by Zimpapers’ Diamond FM last week, TSCZ regional traffic and safety manager for Manicaland, Mr Claudius Muzuva, said 54 accidents were recorded in Manicaland during the period between August 6 and August 18. During the same period last year, 51 accidents were recorded in the province.

“Eight people died in accidents recorded during that time compared to four deaths recorded during the same period last year. There were seven fatal accidents in that period compared to two recoded last year.

“This means that at least one person died in every one of those accidents.

“This makes us worried because it appears as if we are not doing our work properly. We don’t expect people to die like that in accidents,” he said.

There was also an increase in the number of injuries during the period under review from 32 in 2016 to 59 this year.

Mr Muzuva said research had shown that the reason for the increase in accidents was excitement and recklessness during the holidays.

“Also the lack of knowledge especially among pedestrians is also a major cause of concern because some of the fatalities are pedestrians who were hit while crossing the roads.

“You find that some pedestrians think they have the right of way on the road, but they should know that not all cars are being driven by licensed drivers,” he said.

He said the responsibility to reduce accidents lied with everyone in Manicaland, not just the Traffic Safety Council.

“Currently we are working with different organisations to make sure our campaigns that all drivers acquire a Defensive Driver certificate become a success.

“We urge churches and companies to bring their members and employees for defensive training.

“On our part, we will be going to schools and various platforms to educate people on road safety,” he added.
