Traditional leaders are being encouraged to assist their subjects acquire national identification, particularly during the ongoing national registration exercise.

Speaking in Buhera at the launch of the rehabilitation of Mutsindikwa Dam in Ward Five under the Command Water Harvesting Programme held at Marume Primary School last Friday, Manicaland Provincial Administrator Mr Edgars Seenza said the national registration exercise was important.

“We are encouraging people to go and acquire national particulars,” he said. “We are happy that it is being done for free. So, go and acquire your national IDs. The registration process has already begun and as I said before, it is for free.

“Our traditional leaders, please assist people from your areas so that people go and acquire national IDs.” Mr Seenza urged the Registrar-General’s Office to relax conditions needed when acquiring national identification documents.

“I understand there is need for things like proof of residence and some may find it hard to get them,” he said. “It is where we are saying relax those conditions so that everyone gets an ID.” Mr Seenza reminded people who attended the launch about the voter registration exercise which is underway nationwide.

Buhera West legislator Cde Oliver Mandipaka, who also attended the launch, hailed the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC)for its effort to register voters in Buhera. He said although ZEC had one office at Murambinda Growth Point, the registration process began on a “good note”.

“ZEC is making efforts to register voters in this district despite them having one office at Murambinda Growth Point,” said Cde Mandipaka. “We are quite happy with the way they have started the registration exercise.”

Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs, Cde Mandi Chimene, who was represented by the director of affairs in her office, Mr Kennedy Mugarisanwa, was the guest of honour at the event.
