Gutu Rural District Council has finally procured its first refuse compactor for over $150 000, which will improve refuse collection in Mpandawana Town.

The council used to rely on a single tractor for refuse collection.

Gutu RDC chief executive Mr Alexander Mtembwa last week said the new refuse compactor would be handed over to the Mpandawana Town Board next month.

He said the growing population in Mpandawana, coupled with its recent attainment of town status, prompted the purchasing of a new refuse truck.

“All along the whole town, whose average population stands at approximately 24 800, was being serviced by one tractor for refuse collection and disposal,” he said.

Council acting administrator Mr Joseph Ndawi said the refuse compactor was locally procured for $156 000.

“We firstly engaged residents through their structures and agreed with them on the need to buy a refuse truck and they gave us the green light to purchase it and we are very excited about this development, which marks a new stage in our town,” he said.

Mr Ndawi said using a single tractor to collect refuse from an average of more than 4 000 houses in the town board area was a mammoth task for the local authority.

Gutu RDC is being administered by a commission chaired by Mr Steven Muchaurawa, a former local school head.
