LONDON. — Arsenal have confirmed the signing of Switzerland midfielder Granit Xhaka from Borussia Monchengladbach. Sky sources reported at the weekend that Xhaka was in the process of completing the move for a fee in the region of £30m — Arsenal’s third-most expensive transfer.

Xhaka subsequently completed his medical and will join up with his new team-mates after Euro 2016, where he is expected to star for Switzerland.

The 23-year-old has been among outstanding central-midfield performers in the Bundesliga in recent seasons.

And Wenger said: “Granit is an exciting young player, already with good Champions League and Bundesliga experience.

“We have been watching him for a long time now and he is a player who will add quality to our squad.

“We wish Granit a good Euro 2016 with Switzerland and look forward to welcoming him to Arsenal ahead of next season.”

Xhaka has lauded Arsenal as “one of the biggest clubs in the world” and said it will be an honour to wear their jersey.

The Switzerland international also thanked former club Borussia Monchengladbach, saying he would always look back on his time there “with pleasure”.

The Gunners confirmed the transfer yesterday, saying the 23-year-old had signed a “long-term deal” for an undisclosed fee, believed to be £30million.

And Xhaka then posted on his Instagram account, saying: “Now it’s official. From next season on I will play for Arsenal. I want to thank everyone at Borussia.

“Together we brought the club back to where it belongs, to the Champions League. I will always look back with pleasure to that time.

“But from now on I’m totally focused on playing at one of the biggest clubs in the world. It’s a big honour for me to wear the Arsenal jersey, as well as it has been an honour to play for Gladbach in the last four years.

“I hope we see each other again in the Champions League!”

Xhaka is Arsenal’s third biggest signing after Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez. Wenger was keen to rush the deal through in a bid to lift the mood at the Emirates.

They also want a top class striker and centre half as major signings while younger targets like Maxi Romero, Rob Holding and Kieran Tierney could take spending towards the £80m mark.

Xhaka joined Gladbach in 2012, arriving for £6.3million from Swiss side Basel after a stellar year for the Swiss side, winning the league and cup double, with Xhaka named the Swiss Premier League’s young player of the year. — Sky Sports.
