THE Old Mutual Zimbabwe Under-18 rugby had a feel of what their Craven Week Test contest against Namibia could be like after succumbing to a massive 78-5 defeat to Griquas at Kearsney College yesterday.

After a spirited 16-9 winning display against Griquas Rural, the Young Sables came down crushing to the Griquas in a one-sided affair in which Matthew MacNab’s solitary try was the only achievement for the Zimbabweans.

“We didn’t play. I thought coming into the game the boys will want to play based on what happened on Monday,” Old Mutual Zimbabwe coach Godwin “Jaws” Murambiwa said.

It was a rude awakening for the Old Mutual Zimbabwe who were trailing 26-0 by half time with hope of a comeback fading away and it just got worse in the second half as Griquas continued with the slaughter.

Murambiwa added: “It looked like we didn’t want to be on the field and really that is what has happened . . . we embarrassed ourselves as a national team.”

Griquas winger Cameron Hufke was voted man of the match for his four tries and nine conversions.

The other tries came from Ashwill Botha, Rian Kotze, De-An Ackermann (a brace each) and singles from Anton van Romburgh and Gladwin Nieuwenhuizen.
