Govt urged to prioritise ICTs

economy, Deputy Prime Minister Arthur Mutambara has said.
The ICT, said the DPM, if well supported, had the potential of driving other sectors such as agriculture and mining.

The DPM was addressing journalists yesterday after touring stands of exhibitors at the ICT conference in the capital.
“ICT will revolutionise even education, imagine pupils from Tsholotsho having access of notes from Harvard University,” said the DPM who was accompanied by ICT Minister Nelson Chamisa.
“We as Government must put in place policies that promote ICTs. We must put our money where our mouth is. We must walk the talk.”

He said while Zimbabwe might appear to be behind, with hard work and determination the country could do better in ICT than the developed countries.
“Technology is an equaliser. Being behind is an opportunity to leapfrog. The advantage with ICT is that we don’t have legacy challenges. Poor people will understand the importance of banking on the cell-phone than in rich countries. Even if we are behind, we are going to move faster than rich countries,” he said.

“People of Zimbabwe must understand that ICT can be used to drive the economy, you talk of agriculture, mining, manufacturing. ICT is the key enabler of our economy. ICT is the economy and the economy is ICT.”
There is a projection that ICT will contribute more than a trillion United States dollars in Africa alone.

“ICT plays the intermediary role, where you take away the teacher, you take away the classroom, students learning directly from the computer,” he said.
