Newly-refurbished Kwekwe hotel Golden Mile emerged tops when it scooped the first prize under the Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) category at the Zimbabwe Project Management Awards held in the capital recently.

The hotel received a major facelift before reopening last year during a ceremony which was graced by President Emmerson Mnangagwa when he was still Vice-President. The hotel, which boasts of a conference room and offers three star services came up tops, beating Prophet Walter Magaya-owned Turez Investments, which runs Yadah Hotel, which came second.

Golden Mile Hotel director Mr Solomon Matsa said he was elated to be crowned the best hotel at the recent ceremony. He said the hotel would continue to improve standards to meet those of five star hotels. He attributed the recognition to hard work from the hotel team.

“It is not our cleverness. This is about teamwork. We are, however, grateful for being recognised for the efforts we are doing in our quest to become a hospitality entity of repute not only in Kwekwe but in Zimbabwe,” he said.

Mr Matsa, who is also Kwekwe Hoteliers Association President, said their idea was to sell the province as one of the country’s best tourist destinations.

“Plans are underway for us as hoteliers to join hands with those in the tourism sector that we come up with projects we can promote in the province, so that we market it as a tourist destination,” he said.

The awards were organised by Chartered Institute of Project Managers in Zimbabwe and had 18 categories.
