Gokwe businessman robbed of US$9 900, R3 000

FOUR armed robbers pounced on a Gokwe businessman before robbing him of US$9 900, R3 000, a  Taurus gun loaded with 28 rounds and five cellphones.

The robbers later dropped the revolver within the businesman’s yard while fleeing from the scene.

Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said the incident occurred on Sunday at around 1am.

“On the fateful night, Leonard Chari (45), who operates a grocery shop at Masakadza Business Centre, Gokwe South and resides at the shop with his family closed his shop at 8pm and retired to bed.

“At around 1am, the complainant and his wife were awoken by four unknown men armed with axes and logs.”

Insp Mahoko said the robbers demanded cash and other belongings.

“The robbers assaulted the complainant, his wife, children and the shop attendant.”

Insp Mahoko said the robbers went away with US$9 900, R3 000 cash, a revolver and five cellphones all valued at $10 400 and R3 000.

Insp Mahoko said the revolver was recovered within the complainant’s yard possibly after being dropped by the criminals.

“We are appealing for information that may lead to the arrest of the suspects. We further urge members of the public not to keep large sums of money on their premises,” he said.
