FS Raiders unstoppable

BARELY a week after clinching the Zambia Independence Challenge Cup, FS Raiders captured the second round of the Exide 7s Rugby series at Belgravia Sports Club, on Saturday.

The team, who pride themselves in bridging the gap between the women’s game and school-girl rugby, thrashed rivals Pitbulls 48-0 before they walloped Domboshava-based Zimbiru 47-0.

Club co-founder and assistant coach, Prosper Mubaiwa, wants to see the team becoming a heavyweight club.

FS Raiders men’s team were defeated 5-42 by Pitbulls before they were thumped 0-31 by Police Defenders.

Unlike the first round, held a fortnight ago, which had a lot of surprises, the top three seeds flexed their muscles, at the weekend.

Defending champions Pitbulls met old foes, Harare Sports Club, in the final while Old Georgians took on Old Hararians, for third and fourth place.

Coach Daniel Hondo’s Pitbulls beat Sportivo 31-21 in a close contest.

Third place went to Old Georgians, who got the better of the Old Boys, 26-19.

The annual event returned to the fold after a two-year break when sport was brought to a halt by the Covid-19 outbreak.

Harare Province Under-21 Rugby League have Chloride Zimbabwe, through their Exide brand, as the main sponsors.

After its return, a fortnight ago, with 12 men’s and four women’s teams, the Exide 7s Series tournament will reach its climax next Saturday, when the final rounds are played.
