A Zimbabwe National Army soldier allegedly stole cash and a computer from Manyame Air Base canteen before stabbing two of his workmates who tried to apprehend him.
Joseph Zinyembe (30) also escaped from Manyame Air Base cells through the ceiling after he had been arrested. He appeared before magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe charged with two counts of attempted murder, unlawful entry and theft. He is also facing an additional charge of escaping from lawful custody.

The State, led by Miss Sharon Mashavira, made an application in terms of the Mental Health Act section 26 for Zinyembe to be examined by two psychiatrists. Miss Mashavira told the court that there was a suspicion of mental instability.

Zinyembe was not asked to plead and was remanded in custody to August 16.

It is the State’s case that on August 2 this year, Zinyembe unlawfully entered into the canteen at Manyame Air Base through the roof. He then stole a computer, scanner, and US$35 cash and disappeared into the darkness. The stolen property is valued at US$1 000.

Investigations led to Zinyembe’s arrest and he was detained at Manyame Air Base cells, the court heard.

While in the cells, the court heard that Zinyembe hatched a plan to escape. He then used an unidentified object to cut the ceiling and escaped through it. However, an alert soldier who was on guard saw Zinyembe as he fled and he followed in hot pursuit. As he was about to re-arrest him, Zinyembe produced a knife and stabbed his colleague on the chest and ran away. The court further heard that another alert soldier identified him the following day in Highfield and was also stabbed when he tried to arrest him.
