A 30-year-old foreign currency dealer was on Sunday night shot dead by two unknown assailants who attacked him at his house in the new medium-density suburb of Beitbridge.
The incident occurred at around 8pm when the now deceased Rodwin Chimbidzikai had just parked his Toyota Verossa at the gate of his house.
Matabeleland South police spokesman Inspector Philisani Ndebele said the suspects went away with 2 000 rand and a cellphone.
He said when Chimbidzikai alighted from the car and opened the gate, he was approached by two men who were armed with a pistol.

“The wife saw the two assailants as she opened the door to the house,” said Insp Ndebele. “She then ran and hid at the back of the house, leaving him with the two unknown assailants.
“The now deceased was shot once in the head and died instantly.”

Insp Ndebele said after shooting the man, the suspects went into the house where they stole R2 000 and a cellphone, before disappearing into darkness. He said the wife later went to check on the husband and found him lying in a pool of blood.

“She then alerted the police, who subsequently took the body to Beitbridge district mortuary,” said Insp Ndebele. “Chimbidzikai had one gunshot wound on the head.”
Insp Ndebele said no arrests had been made and that they were appealing to anyone with information to contact the nearest police station.

He said they had intensified patrols in Beitbridge and the major highways leading to Harare and Bulawayo where incidents of robberies were rife.
“We are worried at the recurrence of related incidents and we are calling on members of the public to always co-operate with the police in weeding out such criminals from the society,” said Insp Ndebele.

“We have had a lot of taxi drivers and other people being robbed in Beitbridge, hence we have intensified patrols.” The incident comes a few years after another foreign currency dealer was shot in the foot by two gunmen at Dulibadzimu Bus terminus and was robbed of R10 000.
