A Mutare woman masquerading as a Zanu-PF agent allegedly conned a city man of his money after claiming that she would secure him employment as an informer for the party.

Maidei Muza (27) appeared before Mutare provincial magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe, facing fraud charges as read in Section 36 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23.

She pleaded not guilty and was remanded out of custody to September 12 on her own cognisant. Prosecuting, Mr Fletcher Karombe, said sometime in January, Muza approached Gift Tsotsora claiming that she was looking for someone to work as an informer for the ruling Zanu-PF.

She misrepresented to Tsotsora that she was a Zanu-PF agent. Tsotsora, in the company of Muza, allegedly proceeded to her house and on arrival, Muza requested for $60, which she claimed was for processing the job. Muza also told Tsotsora that they should proceed to Harare with $240 to give an unnamed manager to facilitate the job.

Mr Karombe said the two travelled to Harare for the job processing and Muza further requested for another $45 for the bosses. It is alleged that when in Harare, Muza went inside an office of a certain building, leaving Tsotsora behind.

“They returned back to Mutare,” said Mr Karombe. “After some days, Muza requested for $10, which she claimed was for Tsotsora’s fingerprint vetting, $20 for bank card fee, $20 for EC and $20 for a report.

“The total amount stolen is $415 and nothing was recovered.”
