Ousted Harare town clerk Dr Tendai Mahachi has returned the Land Rover Discovery 4 which he was using for the $144 million water project. This comes after Harare Mayor Councillor Bernard Manyenyeni in November last year wrote to Dr Mahachi demanding that he surrenders the vehicle.

Clr Manyenyeni confirmed the development yesterday, and said he had no intention of using the vehicle although his mayoral vehicle was now in bad shape and in need of constant repairs.

Clr Manyenyeni uses a Mercedes ML vehicle, which was bought for his predecessor, Mr Muchadeyi Masunda, at a cost of $130 000.

“I can confirm that we got the project vehicle back from Dr Tendai Mahachi and I don’t intend to have it for my own use,” he said.

“I only ordered it to be collected and Dr Mahachi has brought it back with dignity.

“The vehicle remains council property, so it will be appropriately put to good use. I do not have any intentions for council to buy me a new vehicle as I am already halfway through my term. I have now directed council that they buy a mayoral vehicle in 2018 for my successor.”

In 2014, Clr Manyenyeni turned down a $200 000 mayoral car, but council is said to be in the process of hunting for a new car for him.

Clr Manyenyeni said he refused the Mercedes-Benz S350, arguing that he could do with a car that costs less than $100 000.
