In today’s workplace, organisations have to be more effective and efficient than ever to be competitive. For this reason, employees need to consistently improve their performance. When supervisors conduct performance evaluations effectively, it can optimise productivity in the workplace to align with the organisation’s strategy.

An effective evaluation should work for the benefit of both the employee and the organisation.

Performance improvement

A supervisor knows that a performance evaluation is effective if he can see an improvement in his employees’ performance after the evaluation.

During the evaluation, the supervisor should clearly communicate what is expected of the employee and provide him with an assessment of his current performance so that he can understand the areas he should improve on.

The supervisor knows he conducted an effective evaluation if he was able to identify and resolve challenges in productivity such as any additional training an employee might require.

Job satisfaction

An organisation with job satisfaction, strong retention and employee loyalty, may owe its success, in part, to the effectiveness of performance evaluations.

During an evaluation, supervisors encourage each employee to grow in the organisation by supporting him in his career path.

For instance, the supervisor can discuss learning opportunities and show an increase in compensation with advancement.

An employee who believes he can grow within the organisation is likely to show loyalty to the company.

Development and guidance skills

Conducting a performance evaluation to show performance results requires a trained manager or supervisor who has the skills to focus conversations on development and guidance.

The supervisor discusses the employee’s accountability in his role and the goals and results the organisation expects of him in the short-term and long-term.

In providing guidance, the supervisor develops a relationship with the employee as a coach to help him achieve his goals and support him to meet deadlines, fix an error or other crises he may encounter.

Training

Supervisors may need training on how to get positive results out of performance evaluations.

During a training session, they may learn how to measure performance. The session may highlight the importance of performance evaluations, how to prepare assessment forms to rate skills, strengths and goals, how to set performance goals to motivate the employee, and how to be prepared to provide feedback.

They learn how to make performance evaluations useful and meaningful for the employee. — work.chron.com
