Don’t knock women bosses Cde Joice Mujuru

The Herald, February 14, 1989

THE Minister of Community and Co-operative Development and Women’s Affairs, Cde Joice Mujuru, yesterday told working women not to be so critical of their female bosses.

Addressing the opening of a workshop for women managers of development projects, Cde Mujuru said women tended to be critical of members of their own sex in managerial positions, adding that, for these bosses, “lack of support from their fellow women simply makes the struggle being waged by women even more difficult”.

“Managers of whatever sex have the same responsibilities aimed towards the attainment of a specified set of objectives,” she said.

Workshop chairman Cde Edna Sibanda said the 20-day meeting being attended by more than 30 delegates, aims to help women to become more effective in the traditionally male-dominated management field. – Ziana.

LESSONS FOR TODAY

  • Studies have shown that the progress of women, especially in leadership positions is being hindered by other women who have the pull me her down mentality.
  • Despite resistance that women leaders get from their own kind, they tend to make better managers than their male counterparts, because they are said to be compassionate and patient among other attributes.
  • Professional etiquette dictates that people in managerial positions should be respected regardless of their gender because their roles are similar.
