ENGLAND cricketer Tom Curran, whose late father Kevin represented Zimbabwe at the 1983 and 1987 World Cup tournaments, was caught up in the mass shooting in Las Vegas, United States of America, where 59 people were killed and more than 500 injured by a lone gunman.

The 22-year-old Curran received his first ODI cap for England in the recent series against the West Indies.

Although he was born in Cape Town, his father Kevin was a Zimbabwe international cricketer who also coached the Chevrons between August 2005 and September 2007.

Kevin Curran collapsed and died while jogging in Mutare five years ago and was the head of the Zimbabwe Cricket Academy at the time of his death. Tom Curran is a former student at St George’s College in Harare.

“Craziest experience last night in Vegas. So, so sad but we are all okay! Praying for everyone affected,’’ Tom tweeted.

“I’m no politician, but surely after last night the laws on guns in America need to change?’’

He was in the company of his English county side Surrey teammates Jade Dernbach and Stuart Meaker in Las Vegas during the horrifying gun attack.

The trio flew into Las Vegas over the weekend for the musical festival.

At least 59 people have been confirmed dead and a further 515 injured after lone gunman Stephen Paddock opened fire on crowds at a music festival near the Mandalay Bay hotel.

All three players have tweeted since the incident to let fans know they are safe and well.

Meaker posted: “Thank you for the messages. We are all safe and sound in our rooms in Vegas.”

Dernbach added: “All safe over here in Vegas everyone. Thank you for the messages.”

Curran tweeted: “Craziest experience last night in Vegas. So so sad but we are all okay! Praying for everyone affected.”

Paceman Curran played in his first one-day international against the West Indies last week, taking 1-62 on his England bow.

South Africa-born duo Dernbach and Meaker are also England internationals with Dernbach playing in 24 ODIs and 34 T20 internationals over the course of his career and Meaker two of each. — Sports Reporter/Daily Mirror
