Harare. — Cultural and sporting activities were held concurrently with other activities organised by the Embassy of Angola in Zimbabwe to mark the 13th anniversary of the Day of Peace (April 4), which had its defining moment at a social gathering of the Angolan community that brought together hundreds of people, most of whom were young students.

The cultural part of the commemorations also featured a photographic exhibition alluding to when President Jose Eduardo dos Santos, personally witnessed the formal signing of the document that put to an end the armed conflict on April 4, 2002.

The festivities were marked by another cultural element with the realisation of an allusive lecture delivered by the Military Attaché of Angola in Zimbabwe, Colonel Armando Fernando.

The Military Attaché of Angola in Zimbabwe placed special emphasis on the difficulties the country faced during the war period and hence he highlighted the importance of the arrival of peace for the development of the country.

Colonel Armando also detailed some specific aspects which relate to the importance that President Jose Eduardo dos Santos, as Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, had to end the war and also to manage the national reconciliation process which followed.

In turn, H.E Ambassador Pedro Hendrik Vaal Neto, addressing the Angolan community at the social gathering, also highlighted the role President Jose Eduardo dos Santos played in the achievement of peace and urged all Angolans to defend national unity, and shun any new calls for war.

“War never again” was the unison cry Ambassador Hendrik Vaal Neto asked for and heard repeatedly from the hundreds of people who listened, and who were then entertained by the sound of Angolan music, while enjoying some delicacies prepared by the Angolan community in Zimbabwe.

With regard to sports, the Angolan community did not leave the fate of their merits in unskilled hands, it snatched first place in the quadrangular football trophy, which was also organised by the Diplomatic Mission of Angola in Zimbabwe.

Angolan players, all amateurs, competed with a team representing the Presidency of the Republic of Zimbabwe and two other Zimbabwean teams with vast experience and participation in domestic football tournaments. — Angola Press Agency.
