Gweru City Council has started accepting medical aid cards from various scheme in a move that is expected to ‘‘improve residents’’ access to health care.

Addressing a full council meeting recently, Gweru Mayor Councillor Josiah Makombe said all council clinics are now accepting medical aid cards from residents intending to access health care.

“As Gweru City Council we are now accepting cards from medical aid schemes in all our health facilities. We have introduced specialised services such as dentistry and ultra-scan services at Mkoba, Senga and Mtapa polyclinics for a start. More services will be introduced,” he said.

Clr Makombe said there will be a visiting dentist and an ultra sound specialist available three days a week at its polyclinics.

He said council has incorporated a new committee, which deals with business development issues and facilitates the ease of doing business between investors and the council.

“We have realised that there are business opportunities in the health department hence we are modernising health infrastructure and quality. Council is still exploring other avenues through our business development committee.

Meanwhile the chairperson of the health and housing committee Clr John Manyundwa informed council that they have received an application for the development of private primary and secondary schools in Mkoba 19 and Nehosho suburbs by a private institution.

“The committee has received an application for the development of primary school, secondary school, a hall and church in Mkoba 19 and in Nehosho suburbs respectively from a private institution Harvard Academy, at the land set aside for the development of such facilities. The committee recommends that council approves the application since we do not have any schools in these areas,” he said.
