Kwekwe City Council yesterday took advantage of the national clean-up campaign to clear the drainage system around the city ahead of the rainy season.

Urban council authorities have always battled flooding as a result of blocked drains, especially in the Central Business District.

Acting town clerk Mrs Lucia Mkhandla said they were happy that the national clean-up campaign came at the right time when they were preparing to clear the garbage and drainage systems in the city.

She thanked President Emmerson Mnangagwa for spearheading the clean-up campaign which she said was a task that the local authority could not accomplish alone.

“It was a wise timing. We always had issues with our drainage system and flooding in the CBD during rainy season, now that we had this clean-up campaign, we are not expecting to have this problem because the clean-up was a success.

“We used to do it alone but this time the support from companies was overwhelming,” she said.

Mrs Mkandla said Kwekwe City will continue to do routine clean-ups and to collect refuse constantly.

“We will keep the momentum going as we seek to maintain our status as the best city in the country in terms of cleanliness.
