THE Zimbabwe Amalgamated Council of Churches (ZACC) and church leaders in Manicaland on Wednesday prayed for peace in the country in light of the Constitutional Court case in which MDC-Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa is challenging President Mnangagwa’s election victory.

The prayer meeting was held in Mutare.

In an interview with The Herald, provincial secretary for ZACC, Pastor Portia Zvitambo, said: “Our President is a man of peace and we are gathered here to preach peace to churches in Manicaland concerning the Constitutional Court case that is being held in the capital city.

“We are declaring peace in our nation because we cannot afford to lose more Zimbabwean children to violence in line with the proceedings taking place at the court.”

Pastor Zvitambo urged all Christians to focus on God so that things fall into place, with peace being restored in Zimbabwe.

ZACC organising secretary Apostle Noreen Mbutsa also urged citizens of Zimbabwe to be calm as they await the outcome of the court challenge.

“As the nation eagerly awaits the outcome, they should maintain peace as well as embrace whatever result comes from the proceedings,” she said.

“Zimbabwe is not a warring nation, let us follow in the footsteps of our President who always preaches peace because without peace there is no development.”

Apostle Mbutsa said her calling was to pray for the restoration of Zimbabwe and had sacrificed her teaching profession for that.

ZACC provincial chairperson Mr Thasen Dube said: “We do not want any violence to take place after the outcome and we hope for the best for our nation.”

He also said churches could support the nation if they worked together and the purpose of the meeting was to unite the churches.

Mr Dube added: “As churches we understand that true leadership comes from God and all we have to do is to support and pray for whatever comes out from the proceedings and speak peace all the way.”

Mr Chamisa polled 44,3 percent of the vote to  President-elect Mnangagwa’s 50,8 percent, who was subsequently declared the winner on August 3.

The apex court is expected to announce its judgement today.
