Chitungwiza gets $363k for road maintenance

Herald Correspondent
Chitungwiza Municipality will soon receive its annual allocation of $363 000 from the Zimbabwe National Roads Administration (Zinara), which will be channelled to the rehabilitation of the deteriorating road infrastructure in the town. Motorists are complaining about the poor state of roads.

Town clerk Mr George Makunde confirmed the developments, saying they sent an application to Zinara and are awaiting their share.

“We sent an application for our allocation to Zinara and we are still to get the money. I am not sure when we are going to receive it because it is their prerogative, when funds are available they will give us the money,” he said.

“We submit a work’s programme, which indicates the amount of work that we would want to do, the material we are going to purchase, the amount of tar among other things,” he said.

Mr Makunde said Zinara will disburse $363 000 each to all local authorities at once. “When we get our money, we are going to do a number of roads and some of the major roads includes the one from St Mary’s Police Station down to the New Chitungwiza Road.

“We also intend to do the road from Surface to Makoni and the one from council head offices to Unit C junction,” said Mr Makunde.

In a tender notice flighted in an advert, council said is expecting to get its share from Zinara.

. . . council engages Makandiwa

The cash-strapped Chitungwiza Municipality has approached United Family International Church founder Prophet Emmanuel Makandiwa for partnership to improve service delivery and rehabilitate run-down infrastructure.

Prophet Makandiwa is building a mega church that will change the face of the town at its completion. Chitungwiza mayor Councillor Philip Mutoti addressed thousands of UFIC members at their New Year’s eve all-night gathering at the church dubbed Cross Over Night last week where he revealed that the town was going to work with the church for development.

“Prophet Makandiwa is a true Prophet of God,” he said, much to the applause of the more than 60 000 congregants who attended the Cross Over Night. “It was difficult for us to work without seeing the people of God. There is no other greater Prophet who can gather something greater than what Prophet Makandiwa has done.

Clr Mutoti said the town council was grateful to Prophet Makandiwa for choosing Chitungwiza as the location for his state-of-the-art church.

Clr Mutoti, who was accompanied by several councillors at the church service, said areas of co-operation could include refuse collection.

When he took to the podium Prophet Makandiwa confirmed that discussions had begun with the Chitungwiza mayor and his team.

In an interview yesterday, Clr Mutoti said Chitungwiza needed a complete overhaul as its council was facing many challenges, including failure to provide essential services to its residents.

“Prophet Makandiwa has a huge following and on the night (Cross Over Night), I addressed thousands of his congregants at the church in Chitungwiza close to Town Centre.

“Some of the issues I addressed involve the improvement of service delivery on water, refuse collection and rehabilitation of our roads that are in a bad state.”

Clr Mutoti said his council decided to approach Prophet Makandiwa after realising the importance of different stakeholders in Chitungwiza.

Clr Mutoti said council invited Prophet Makandiwa to their head office in Chitungwiza yesterday where they deliberated on the issues.
