Chiredzi Town on cusp of major expansion

George Maponga in Masvingo
Chiredzi is on course to undergo major expansion after Government gave the nod to the sugar cane-growing town council to acquire 750ha of peri-urban land for housing and building modern shopping complexes.

The acquisition will bring relief to the local authority that had run out of expansion land as demand for residential and industrial land soared.

Chiredzi Town Council and its rural district council are now working to set up a joint authority to co-manage the 750ha which straddles from Croco Motors complex along the Chiredzi-Chisumbanje road to near the banks of Chiredzi River.

The land currently falls under Chiredzi Rural District Council(RDC).

Chiredzi RDC chief executive Mr Ailess Baloyi confirmed formation of a joint authority, to facilitate transfer of the 750ha expansion land to the town council, was in motion.

Mr Baloyi said Government has already waved on transfer of the land in question from his council to Chiredzi Town.

Besides ordinary home-seekers and new investors,Chiredzi has hundreds of cash-rich sugar cane farmers who have pestering the local authority and Government for land to build modern houses.

Chiredzi is Masvingo’s industrial capital with its economy undergirded by a vibrant sugar industry that employs more than 20 000 permanent and temporary staff, directly and indirectly.
