Chinhoyi taps running, again

Chinhoyi residents, who have endured years of limited or no water at all, are set to have uninterrupted supplies following moves by the municipality to double treatment capacity.

Efforts to secure a partner are already underway for the water augmentation project expected to be completed before the end of the year.

The project is expected to run into millions of dollars. Work will include expansion of clarifiers and sand filtration pools, which will increase treatment capacity from the current 16 megalitres a day to around 40 megalitres.

Demand stands at 30 megalitres per day, necessitating water rationing as supply falls short of demand.

Director of engineering services, Eng Simon Marara said the project would also cater for future residential and industrial expansion projects.

“After expansion works, we should be able to double our current treatment capacity from the current 16 megalitres to around 40 megalitres of water per day,” he said.

Eng Marara said the municipality had more than enough pumping capacity to ensure all areas received water supplies once treatment capacity had been improved.

Meanwhile, construction work and completion of the Mzari Clinic, which was abandoned midway a decade ago is set to resume.

At least $130 000 is earmarked for that project.

Health technician Mr Tendai Mukuruva, said the clinic would help people in Mzari, Mzari Extension, Olympus and Mapako.

A donor funding the project, Danida, pulled out unceremoniously 10 years ago.
