Police Commissioner-General Dr Augustine Chihuri yesterday warned people who sexually abuse children that they will be dealt with decisively. Speaking at the 2015 ZRP Primary Schools Merit Awards ceremony in Harare yesterday, Comm- Gen Chihuri said children had a divine right to be protected from exploitation and abuse.

“It is important that children are protected, nurtured and nourished by love and dependable comfort from both parents, guardians, relatives and the society at large,” he said.

“Certainly, the organisation will ensure that those given to perpetuating evil acts against children are dealt with decisively and to the full extent and wrath of the law.”

Comm-Gen Chihuri said it was sad to note that in some cases children were abused by those who were supposed to protect them such as guardians and teachers.

He commended parents with children at ZRP schools for creating the necessary support home environment for their children to “bloom and blossom”.

“I would want to urge the parents to continue the good and responsible work that we have witnessed within our schools,” said Comm- Gen Chihuri. “The parents have demonstrated remarkable commitment in working together with their respective headmasters and teachers.”

Comm-Gen Chihuri said the merit awards brought together seven primary schools to celebrate the outstanding achievements by pupils in both the Zimsec Grade Seven national examinations and extra-mural endeavours.

He said he was pleased to note that the ZRP primary schools had consistently churned out quality education as attested by their results.

“I am told that in 2014, all our seven primary schools scored an average pass rate of 93 percent,” said Comm-Gen Chihuri. “The collective pass rate is an improvement from the 2013 average pass rate of 90 percent.”

Senior Staff Officer Education Assistant Commissioner Elina Jane Chibage said they awarded prizes to pupils who attained four units at Grade Seven; the most improved school in 2014; the school with the highest number of four units; and, the best 2014 Grade Seven results in specific subjects.

“This is a noble event aimed at motivating and awarding prizes to pupils and schools that have excelled in academic and co-curricular activities,” she said.

More than 40 pupils walked away with certificates and books at a ceremony that was attended by senior Government officials, mostly from the education sector.
