Chikurubi jailbreak suspect applies for bail

Convicted Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison jailbreak suspect Lucky Mhungu (38) yesterday said his life was in danger and could no longer stay in prison since he was of ill-health.

“I am afraid of being in prison because I am diabetic and have ulcers. There are no medical facilities in prison enough to keep me in good shape.

“More so, the complainant in the matter of the jailbreak is stationed at that same prison and being in the same place will create many squabbles,” he said.

Mhungu also argued that the court could put stringent conditions for him to ensure that he would not flee.

“Prison is not a five-star hotel, and everyone should be given an opportunity to be tried from home,” he said.

This was revealed during Mhungu’s bail application before Harare magistrate Mr Francis Mapfumo.

In response, prosecutor Mr Michael Reza argued that Mhungu is a serving prisoner whose release date is July 8 2034 and it was not possible for him to be granted bail.

“Applicant and his accomplices tried to escape from the maximum prison, what can stop him from fleeing the country if he is granted bail?”
