Chegutu Municipality has begun rehabilitating its water reticulation system that involves the installation of a new water line as part of measures to curb water leakages. The project, which is expected to be complete by end of year, will also see residents accessing potable water in the town that has been plagued by cholera outbreaks in recent years.

In an interview, Chegutu Municipality Town Clerk Mr Alex Mandigo said there will be no disruption to water supplies during the installation.

“We are replacing a two-kilometre stretch of the old water pipeline. The new line is adjacent to the old one.
“Instead of replacing the old one completely, we have decided to leave it intact so that in future we might use the two interchangeably during faults,” he said.

Mr Mandigo said the council also contracted a firm to rehabilitate its water reservoirs.
“We want to boost our water supplies across the city and in space of about three weeks some areas that had no access will start receiving it.

“Our immediate target is rehabilitating the ZRP reservoir to increase our water supplying sources,” he said.
Mr Mandigo said the replacement of water meters in some parts of the town is on hold due to shoddy work by the contracted firm.

“We engaged a new contractor after realising that the one we had engaged had no actual capacity to install the water meters,” he said.

Chegutu is replacing its water meters after realising that there is a sizeable number of households that are receiving water without being billed.

In some instances, faulty water meters have been giving false readings.
