Gweru residents have urged council to spruce up public properties, which are now in a deplorable state. Gweru Residents and Ratepayers Association president Cornelius Seliphiwe said council has neglected public places such as Mkoba Hall where the doors are no longer lockable and all toilets are not working.

“As residents, we are not happy about the shoddy maintenance of council properties. We are paying money for service delivery but at times there is no service at all.

“Mkoba Hall is one of the cases of a deserted public space. How do people operate in a hall where there are no functional toilets?”

He said ablution facilities should be functioning at all times to avoid a health hazard “The lack of functional toilets is a breeding ground for the outbreak of disease such as typhoid and dysentery.”

Mr Selipiwe said there is an urgent need for the resuscitation of the hall and maintenance of the outer space
“I cannot believe that council is failing to repair the doors and put locks. The local authority cannot even cut grass around the hall that provides a service to a large population of Mkoba residents.

Meanwhile, councillor Catherine Mhondiwa of Ward 12 in Mkoba also noted that council should urgently attend to Mtapa graveyard where there is need to cut grass and equip employees working there with protective clothing.

“Council employees working at the graveyard area in Mtapa should be provided with protective clothing because I have seen them scooping water in grave pits with bare hands.”

Meanwhile, Gweru residents have raised concern over poor service delivery by the MDC-T-led local authority.
