The British Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Melanie Robinson has commended the Government for successfully taming the machete-wielding gangs which had wreaked havoc in the country especially in the mining areas.

Machete-wielding gangs had wreaked havoc in mining towns attacking and robbing people of valuables including gold.

This prompted Government to set up an inquiry on the issue and the chairperson for the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Mines and Mining Development, Cde Edmand Mukaratigwa said the report was due to be tabled in parliament this month.

Ambassador Robinson said the country was endowed with rich mineral resources and if harnessed properly, could turn around the country’s economy.

She was speaking during a courtesy call to the Midlands Provincial and Devolution Minister, Senator Larry Mavima this afternoon.
She said she has been touring Bulawayo, Gwanda and Gweru.

“The mineral resource base especially here in the Midlands and Gwanda is incredible, what is only needed is more formal mining than artisanal type of mining. However, I would like to commend you for managing to deal with the violent machete gangs that had been moving around committing crimes in the mining areas. The situation is now very calm and peaceful,” she said.
