THE Basketball Union of Zimbabwe will this week hold elections to elect a new executive during their congress in Harare.
The congress is pencilled for Friday and all posts are up for grabs from the president, secretary-general, technical president, competitions director, women and youth and athletes’ commission.
The outgoing executive led by Addison Chiware got into office in 2009 and their four-year term came to an end in September when a notice was sent out for the forthcoming elections.

BUZ’s outgoing competitions director, Simon Lawson, said they sent out a 90-day notice with November 29 being the deadline for the submission of nominees and there will be no late entries.

“A notice was sent to all provinces on September 29 and that 90-day notice we gave to all provinces was saying on November 29 all aspiring candidates should have submitted their documents that is the nomination form, declaration of citizenship, you have to be Zimbabwean, and curriculum vitae.

“Provinces have to nominate them and it’s up to the nominated person to put their papers. It is covered in the constitution that you have to meet the deadline.  “Some are crying foul because they were late but 60 days is a lot of time. That’s when we judge to see if you are a leader or not and those are simple things that will test your character,” said Lawson.

The outgoing BUZ competitions director said the nominees will be announced 48 hours before the elections but indicated that he will not be running for any position in the coming elections.

“I am taking a break to give others opportunity because I believe in grooming others. Secondly it’s because of work commitments, this requires a lot of time so if you don’t have time don’t take the post because you will short-change the association,” said Lawson.

Some of the posts such as the secretary-general, technical president and women and sport were left vacant after the trio of Watson Muchengeti, Lainos Mushonga and Tino Mashapaidze resigned from the union due to work commitments.
