Aspiring female politicians undergo mentorship programme

TWENTY women from various political parties in Makonde district are currently going through a training and mentorship programme in Chinhoyi in preparation for the 2022 by-elections and 2023 harmonised elections.

The Women Rise in Politics (WRiP) programme is being facilitated by the Zimbabwe Gender Commission (ZGC) in conjuction with United Nations(UN) Women whose other aim is to promote participation and rise of women in politics.

The same programme has been rolled out in Harare, Mutare, Bulawayo, Bindura, Marondera, Gwanda and Kwekwe.

Hwange, Plumtree, Gutu and Zvishavane districts will have access to the same workshop next week.

In her remarks, ZGC chief executive officer, Mrs Virginia Muwanigwa said the (WRiP) is “a joint initiative between ZGC and UN Women anchored on promoting women’s leadership development in politics and decision making spheres.”

“The WRiP initiative has also been designed in line with ZGC’s constitutional mandate and fulfills amongst other functions, specifically” to do everything necessary to promote gender equality, gender equity and gender mainstreaming,” she said.

Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprise Development Deputy Minister, Jenifer Mhlanga, Mhangura Legislator Precious Chinhamo Masango and provincial and local council aspiring councillors are attending the four-day workshop which ends today.
